Using Movers vs. Doing it Yourself

By Eddie Gallese

When it comes to moving there are three basic considerations that immediately come to mind: the amount of stuff you have, the distance you have to go, and the amount of money you are willing to spend. How do these factors affect you? The first one is simple. The more stuff you have the more effort you are going to expend, if you decide to move without the use of a moving company. Distance adds another level of complexity as it affects the amount of planning that goes into the move. Finally money affects how you do the move. Folks trying to save some cash may be tempted to forego using a moving company. However such a choice might be a little hasty. More things affect the moving process than just these factors. Here are a few things all people should consider before they move.

  • Movers are professionals. This means that they know exactly how to get the job done as quickly as possible. This is especially important if you are under a time crunch.
  • Are you moving a lot of fragile material? Not only do movers know exactly how to best pack your fragile goods, but also when you use movers your stuff is insured.
  • A larger house means that you are going to need to rent a larger truck. A larger truck cost more money to rent and to put gas in.
  • The longer the move the more money you need to pay for gas and for mileage.
  • If you only plan to travel one-way (which you presumable do) you may have to pay a premium on the rental truck.
  • Moving require special equipment that you do not have. Does your car have a hitch to attach your trailer to? Do you have bungee cords to secure things on the roof of your car?
