How To Protect Yourself from Scams: An Interview with Quick Fix Locksmith

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We offer all residential (re-key, change locks, lockouts, safes, etc.), automotive (chip keys, lockouts, reg. car keys, ignition work, motorcycles, etc.) and commercial services (electronic door buzzers, re-keys, lockouts, safes, etc.). We have a guarantee on all work performed (licensed and insured, LIC #B16267). We are 24/7 and give FREE estimates over the phone. We come to our customers' location to perform work.

What is your position at Quick Fix Locksmith?

I am part owner and office manager.

Do you recommend customers re-key periodically to ensure the safety of their home?

Customers do not need to rekey to be safe, but there are other security measures we perform to make doors and locks safer, so robbers can't kick in doors during home invasion, which happens often in Houston. Also, when people rent the landlord should always re-key homes (a law) and when buyers sell houses they need to be re-keyed.

What are some scandals commonly involved with the Locksmith industry?

There are many scammer locksmiths in Houston. They usually have a call center and quote $29 and up over the phone. Usually the UP of the price is triple our price. Customers DO NOT NEED TO PAY a locksmith if they come out and change the price from what was quoted over the phone when they get there. All our prices are quoted over the phone and don't change upon arrival. Usually 30 mins. Or less.

Have keyless locks become more popular as technology has evolved or do you find people still prefer the key locks?

Yes, I think keyless locks are more popular. They're great because you don't have to have a bunch of spare keys to give to family members. Also, you can be almost hands free opening the door instead of fumbling for keys.

Please describe the process of lock bumping and what I can do to prevent this from happening to my home.

Most locks can be bumped. Many criminals do not know the process or have the correct tools to bump locks. There are special locks we can install to prevent this from happening, but most of the break in calls we receive are from doors being kicked in. Like I stated earlier we have many ways to reinforce doors and locks.

Do you have any new plans for your company in the near future?

We are planning to expand and obtain store fronts. Most of the work we do now is mobile.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you?

Our company number is 832-279-3016 to receive service. Most likely our owner Chris McClure will answer the phone and give you personal service instead of having a calling service or machine.
