Providing Quality Materials at an Affordable Cost: An Interview with DGP Painting

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

DGP Painting is an interior/exterior residential painting firm. We specialize in re-paints, specialty finishes such as staining, etc. We also do texture work, interior dry wall repair, wallpaper removal, and light carpentry work.

How did you get into this line of work?

I got into this link of work about five years ago. I had been working as a chef in Austin for quite some time. Truthfully, working Friday, Saturday, and Sundays began to leave me feeling drained. I had a friend who was working for a painting company and they were looking for an operations manager. I interviewed, landed the job, and I've been working here for about six years. It definitely suits me better. It's always nice being able to put a smile on the customer's face.

I see that you're part of Austin's Best Contractors Network. What exactly does this mean? What do you need to do to become a member?

This was actually started by the owner a few years back. We found out who was the best in town, brought them all together, and gathered their contact info. As of now, it's basically just a directory. Customers in the area can access this directory and find contractors that we trust and that we know have a good reputation.

What are some steps homeowners should keep in mind during the painting process?

The most important thing is to have made a decision on what you want to do first. What color do you want? What texture do you want? Do you want it to be washable? The client must know what they are looking for prior to starting the project. It is also important to note that this process will undoubtedly be an invasion of your home. A contractor is lying if they try to tell you otherwise. There will be tarp and plastic everywhere. If we are re-painting the kitchen, you will not have access to this area for at least a week. We are honest with our clients and let them know that their house will be turned upside down and they must prepare accordingly. Be sure to remove any delicates or breakables, and cover any surfaces for protection. There must be open communication so the homeowner is aware that this is intrusive and will put you out of place for a bit.

What are some key qualities that a homeowner should expect from a good painting company?

The most important thing is setting expectations. Setting expectations for a client is crucial, especially with some of the older homes. There are two ways of going about anything. Some of these homes have a lot of work that needs to get done in order to get to like-new condition. They should be giving you a couple options so you can pick what you want based on your budget and vision for your home. It's also important for them to be transparent. The contract should be detailed enough so there are no grey areas. It should read like a recipe- not leaving anything out about the process.

What sets your business apart from others? Are there things you believe you do better/different?

We are really big on quality of projects. There is no reason to use materials that are not of exceptional quality. If you look at most projects, the actual cost of materials is not very expensive. Most of the cost is the labor of the project. Therefore, there is really no reason to supply anything less than superior quality. We're also very detailed in our bids and our contracts. It's very important to have everything presented on the piece of paper so everybody knows what to do. We also stand behind our work 100%. We will go back as many times as we need to in order to give you what you paid for.

What are the most difficult kinds of projects?

The most difficult situation is new construction. There are always changes, there are always different contractors, and everyone wants to get things done as soon as possible. The owners want to paint as soon as possible to show progress. However, the painting should really be done last. We are finishers. We need to be the last one because other contractors will bring in dust, lean on walls, etc. This is going to affect the paint job and force us to come back in order to fix the issue. Also, the nature of new construction is unreliable. Things are constantly changing. It is hard to execute contracts when the actual building has not been done yet.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you?

The best way is to retrieve our contact info through our website.
