Master Electricians for Your Home: An Interview with Bryant Electric Services

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Bryant Electric Services offers premier residential and commercial electrician services for the greater Austin area. We've been in business for over 25 years, and have Master Electricians on staff ready to tackle any project.

What are common electrical mistakes new homebuyers make?

New homebuyers don't always consider that the previous homeowners may or may not have had a licensed electrician perform wiring for any repair or remodeling projects they did. Have your home inspector do a thorough inspection of the home's electrical system and provide you with a detailed report of every project, small or large, that needs to be done to bring the house up to current electrical codes.

What are common electrical mistakes people don't realize they are making?

Knowing the code requirements is the most common mistake I see homeowners have made when they do their own electrical repairs or remodeling projects to their homes. Different types of outlets and circuits have different uses; an outlet in a bathroom, for example, should be completely isolated on its own separate circuit.

People often think that hiring a licensed electrician is significantly more expensive than doing a project yourself, though it isn't. People take on technical projects as do-it-yourself projects to save money, but the savings difference is not worth the risk of a fire or someone being injured due to shock if you don't get the project right.

Are there any electrical services people should have done or checked out on a regular basis?

The materials used in electrical systems needs to be checked for wear-and-tear, just as with any other system in your home. For example aluminum wiring connections require periodic maintenance. One issue with aluminum wire is that it isn't as stable of a conductor as copper and will expand and contract over time as the metal heats up and cools down. I recommend that anyone with aluminum wiring to plugs and switches have an electrician perform a whole-house inspection every 7-8 years and tighten all connections in all devices (i.e., plugs and switches).

What electrical services should be checked out as soon as a new homeowner settles in?

When you buy a new home, there is a limit to the amount of information you can get from the home inspection. Once you settle in, hire a licensed electrician to do a whole-home inspection, checking wiring, outlets, and circuits for the overall condition of the materials and installation. The previous homeowner should have had these checked every 7-8 years while they lived in the house, but when you move in you have no guarantee as to when the last check-up was.

Electrical codes change regularly because new discoveries are made every day, and those discoveries often have implications on what the safest way is to do things like wire a home. If you are not the first owner of your new home, the odds are that there are some electrical codes that have been updated since your home was built.

Do you have any tips for people looking to save on their electric bill?

For immediate results, replace the light bulbs in your home with energy-efficient bulbs. This is the upgrade that will get you the most benefit for a small investment. Not only do the bulbs use less energy themselves, but they emit less heat, requiring less from your air conditioner during the summer. Many people may already know this tip, but it's worth repeating.

What financial incentives are available to those who install the vehicle charging station?

Many cities and utility providers in major cities currently offer very good rebates to cover the cost of electrical installation and the charger itself. These vary by city, and the information is usually easy to find online.

Are any of the lighting products you offer energy efficient?

For commercial jobs, we provide energy efficient options for warehouse lighting, office lighting, and recessed lighting. For residential jobs, people typically have purchased fixtures and we simply install them.

What sets your business apart from other comparable companies? Is there anything you believe you do better/different?

We try hard to treat all of our customers with courtesy and respect, offering as much information as possible to help them make an educated decision on how to proceed with their electrical project.

For those looking to sell, how important is proper wiring in the value of the home?

Depending on the housing market in your area, you may have to do more work to get your electrical system up to current codes to get homebuyers interested in it. No matter what the housing market is like, a recently-inspected and updated whole-house electrical system will be attractive to homebuyers. Whether you take on this larger project or not, you should have a licensed electrician inspect your home and repair obvious problems with code or wear-and-tear because any home inspector will find these issues, and serious homebuyers will likely ask you to repair them before the closing on the home.

What should customers look for in a good electrician?

When you're trying to find an electrician, look for how many years they have been in business and whether they have good and legitimate referrals (on something like Angie's List, Customer Lobby, Google, or Yelp). You can always ask an electrician for current references.
